Description: This acrylic painting was inspired by the likeness of 1920s film star Pola Negri. She was born in Poland and then found fame in the United States doing silent films. I find her inspiring because she has such a dramatic face and there are so many reference photos of her because she was a favorite of the portrait photographers of the 1920s. She was a theater actress, film star, ballerina, author, and recording artist. She had a scandalous side to her as well, marrying counts and princes of Europe, and having rumoured affairs with Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino. This painting emphasizes green eyes and green eye make- up to invoke a feeling of envy and jealousy. Her chin is tiny and her forehead and eyes are large to draw attention to them. This painting is illustrating the strength of women doing what they want in love leading to envy and jealousy of the outside world against her. Pola’s eyes aren’t green, but the viewer sees them in that way.
