I’m Over It
Silent Women – 1920s Film Stars
Acrylic on Canvas
16 x 20 inches
This acrylic painting was inspired by the likeness of 1920s film star Louise Brooks. I find her inspiring because she is an icon of the silent film era with her signature bob hair cut and dark smirk. She described herself as a sexually liberated woman and even posed fully nude in photographs. She refused to be pushed around by the studios when they wanted her to join the talkies and redub a role. She was then unofficially blacklisted from Hollywood. This painting emphasizes her resistance to change with her skintone being grayscale and the background pastel and bright. She ended up retiring young from Hollywood.
